When time is tight and life feels overwhelming, small moments of connection with God can anchor your soul and renew your spirit.

One of the most common enemies in the life of the believer is lack of time and being busy.

Many of us scratch our heads when it comes to spending time with the Lord and reading His word. When am I supposed to fit that in? For those of us who do have a devotional rhythm, we know how easy it is to let it go by the wayside in favor of daily tasks. Staying disciplined once a rhythm is in place is difficult, and establishing healthy rhythms to begin with is even more of a challenge. Guilt and shame can cause us to miss opportunities to worship the Lord.

Here are some practical ways to maintain healthy spiritual rhythms in the busyness of life.

Taste and see – literally!

Say a quick prayer of thanks. Doing so brings glory to God, no 45-minute devotional and journaling session required. Psalm 34 invites us to taste and see the Lord’s goodness. This earthy imagery describes both spiritual and physical reality. Notice little whispers of eternity in your life; the smile of a loved one, a delicious cup of hot coffee, a rainbow on the drive home from work. God’s handiwork is everywhere; take these opportunities to notice it!

Understand how the Lord is providing manna for you today.

When the worries of life begin to overwhelm us, we can take a few deep breaths and remind ourselves of this truth. The Israelites wandered in the wilderness sustained by bread or manna from heaven. They did not know what it was, where it came from, nor could they stockpile and store it. The Lord sustains us moment by moment. He provides for us manna day by day, so long as we abide in Him.

Listen to God’s word - literally!

Download an audio Bible app to your phone and try to listen to Scripture on your drive home. Many people in the ancient world could not read, and many parts of Scripture were originally read aloud. Perhaps your goal is to begin reading Scripture in the mornings but there is rarely enough time. This is a good place to start.

Finally, consider the usefulness of breath prayers –

brief prayers that capture a truth from Scripture about God. One of my favorites is, “Gentle Shepherd, carry me”. Pair each part of the phrase with a deep inhale and exhale. Pause and reflect – how do you feel after praying in this way?

Consider these strategies when it feels impossible to spend time with the Lord.

However, if this is a consistent problem, perhaps there are other issues at play. Establishing healthy rhythms requires reflection and sometimes rearranging our priorities.
