Practical ways to deepen your roots in Scripture and experience the goodness of God.

Proverbs 1 speaks of finding wisdom within its pages, and verse 7 specifically connects the fear of the Lord with knowledge.

Fearing God is a multi-faceted concept rooted in His holiness and an awareness of our sinfulness.  Fearing God relates to a reverence and awe that only He deserves.

I’d like you to pause for a moment and consider the most beautiful place you’ve ever been.  Your memory might take you to the beach, a mountain top, or a tree stand.  It’s where you find yourself exhaling.  It’s where you can experience feeling a sense of smallness in light of the expanse of God’s beauty reflected in nature.

How does that memory impact you?  Oftentimes, my clients tell me that it restores a sense of peace to their minds and bodies.  I believe the reason is that it helps us experience an expression of God.

Just as our cars move in the direction of our focus, so our lives tend to be shaped by what captivates our hearts and minds.  If you want to grow in Him, consider the practice of intentional pondering.  Here are some options:

  1. Read or listen to the reading of the Bible daily. Engage this practice with some flexibility and freedom. Savor it.

  2. Listen to the application of God’s Word through worship songs and sermons.

  3. Actively participate in the life of a local church.

  4. Engage personal and church family in conversation about His Word and the evidence of His goodness and presence.

Finally, slow down so you can notice Him.

David, in Psalm 34, encourages us to “taste and see that the Lord is good!” (ESV, verse 8).  The more you are captivated by His beauty, the more you’ll want to understand and walk with Him!
