Following Jesus Beyond the Boat: Overcoming Fear to Embrace Your Calling

It’s not just about stepping out in faith—it’s about trusting Jesus to lead you through what feels impossible.

Most of the sermons I’ve heard about Peter walking on the water focus on Peter’s courage.
But I believe this story points us to a greater reality that Jesus was placing a call on Peter’s life - a call in which there was no room for fear, so Jesus brought it to light.
Yes, Peter had enough courage to make himself available to Jesus, he had enough courage to get out of the boat, but when it came down to it, the reality of the storm was too much for his flesh. Jesus' response wasn’t to encourage him to have more faith in his own abilities, nor was it to shame him. Instead, he pulled him up, led him back to the boat, and asked him why he had any doubt at all. (see Matthew 14:22-36 for the full story)
I think this is often where we find ourselves, if we’re honest.
Maybe we want God to use our gifts for His glory, but we’re too afraid we don’t have anything of value, so we never make ourselves available. Maybe we make ourselves available until we see how big the task is and decide to stay in the safety of the boat after all. Maybe we even sign up for something that feels too big for us, but when it comes to actually doing it, our fear of failure makes us forget a freeing truth - our success isn’t dependent on us!
Our success is dependent on allowing him to lead us, shape us, correct us, and even discipline us, and as he does this, he takes us by the hand and guides us where he wants us to go.
Here are a few verses to consider if fear is holding you back from your true calling:
Galatians 1:10
Hebrews 13:20-22
I Corinthians 12
Ephesians 4:1-16
I pray these truths bring you courage, not only to step out of the boat, but to keep your eyes on Jesus as you let him lead you.
