Finding Joy in the Beauty of and Care for God's Creation

Connecting with the Creator through the wonder of the world He created.

Our world teems with the natural beauty of Creation. In the beginning, to the wonder of our eyes, the land was lush and green, the waters clear beneath sparkling stars. As time has passed, these creations of God have become muddled with the creations of humanity, and in the modern world where we live, it can often be hard to experience the joy that God always wanted to be ours. It is just as important now as it ever was to experience this joy and allow ourselves to be enveloped in the beauty of all He has made.
One of the most direct ways to do this is to come away to a place where the natural world can be readily admired, whether it be to the ocean, the mountains, a local park, or even your own backyard. Wherever the place you have easiest access to, it’s important to mindfully engage in your surroundings. Take the time to smell the sweet fragrance of a flower, taste a honeysuckle, listen to the sound of the wind, feel the warmth of the sun on your face, or look up at the vastness of the nighttime sky.
In all that you experience, know that these are the gifts of your Creator to you; gifts of love that He desires you (and all of us) to steward well.
Just as Adam and Eve were given stewardship over the Garden, we, too, can find joy in stewarding the gardens of our world. We can create tiny gardens in our very own homes, caring for them and delighting in their majesty.
To share a story from my own life, my great-aunt once gave me a beautiful African violet from a plant that had once belonged to her mother. She explained to me that each one of her sisters had been given a flower from this plant, just as she passed it on to me. Because of this significant history, there’s been a part of me that feels nervous about being tasked with keeping it alive. But every time I look at it in the light of my windowsill, I’m reminded of the simple love that has kept its story going across time.
As we seek to find joy in the beauty of and care for God’s creation, may we also be reminded that we ourselves are forever bonded to it, that He formed us from the same dust as He formed the stars in the sky!
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
and crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under his feet…
~Psalm 8:3-6 ESV
